Microbiology does not have a single founder. Different people are called the "father" of the field, or of one of its branches, for different reasons, which is why searches like "father of microbiology" and "father of bacteriology" return different names.

This article sets out who is credited with what, and why, so the titles stop being confusing.
Who is called the father of what

Louis Pasteur, father of microbiology
Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), a French chemist, showed that fermentation and spoilage are caused by microbes, disproved spontaneous generation with his swan-neck flask, helped establish the germ theory of disease, invented pasteurization, and created the first vaccines made from weakened microbes (fowl cholera, anthrax, rabies).

Because his work founded so many parts of the field at once, he is most often called the father of microbiology in the broad sense. His full story is covered in the article on Louis Pasteur.
Robert Koch, father of bacteriology
Robert Koch (1843-1910), a German physician, proved that specific bacteria cause specific diseases, isolating the agents of anthrax, tuberculosis, and cholera. He developed the pure culture technique and the four criteria now known as Koch's postulates, which made the germ theory rigorous.

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, father of microscopy
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), a Dutch tradesman and lens maker, built simple microscopes powerful enough to see single-celled life. In the 1670s he was the first to observe and describe bacteria and protozoa, which he called "animalcules."

He is called the father of microbiology by some and the father of microscopy by others, because he was the first person to see the microbial world, long before anyone understood what it did.
Edward Jenner and vaccination
Edward Jenner (1749-1823), an English physician, introduced the first vaccine in 1796, using cowpox to protect against smallpox. His work predates Pasteur's by decades, and Pasteur later coined the word "vaccine" in his honor.

Jenner is often called the father of immunology or of vaccination, a title he shares with Pasteur, who generalized the method to other diseases.
Joseph Lister, father of antiseptic surgery

Joseph Lister (1827-1912), a British surgeon, took the germ theory into the operating room. Reasoning that microbes cause wound infection, he introduced antiseptic technique using carbolic acid, sharply reducing deaths after surgery. He is called the father of antiseptic surgery.
Is Koch or Pasteur the father of microbiology?
This is the most common source of confusion, so it is worth stating plainly. Both are founding fathers, of different things. Pasteur is called the father of microbiology in the broad sense: fermentation, germ theory, spontaneous generation, and vaccines.
Koch is called the father of bacteriology and medical microbiology: proving that specific bacteria cause specific diseases, and building the pure-culture methods and postulates that made that proof possible. When a source says "father of microbiology" without qualification, it usually means Pasteur; when it says "father of bacteriology," it means Koch.
